Reason is superior to revelation - Eriugena

ERIUGENA
Irish scientist, New-Platonic and pantheist Johannes Scotus Eriugena was a famous thelogian and translator. It is claimed that he is the only truely original thinker between Boethius nad St.Anselm. After he died, Pope Honorius ordered his books to be burned. He said philosophy was as important as religion. Reason was superior to revelation. After reason Church Fathers were the most important authority. He said God and the universe were identical. What he said was close to atheism. He believed that human reason was capable of attining truths by comtemplating visible creatures. He made translations from Greek. His translation of Pseudo-Dionysius had a long-range effect on the development of Western thought. His most important work De Divisione Naturae was ultimately condemned as heretical at the Council of Pisa in 1210. Honorius III ordered all copies of the De Divisione Naturae to be burned publically in 1225. Those who did not burn the book were to be excommunicated and/or declared heretics. In spite of these condemnations, the book has survived and has been very influencial.
